Controversy Over Mundial 2026 Ticket Extortion Claims

Officials from the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) reportedly made a proposal to the FMF to reduce a million-dollar sanction in exchange for tickets for the inauguration of the 2026 World Cup at the Estadio Azteca. They also reportedly demanded the hiring of a legal firm close to them.

The INAI is facing a controversy after the FMF filed a complaint for alleged extortion. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, acting president, announced that this case of extortion related to the 2026 World Cup will be investigated.

In an intervention during La Mañanera del Pueblo, Sheinbaum commented that INAI workers allegedly offered to reduce fines to the FMF in exchange for World Cup tickets. The INAI imposed fines on the FMF for collecting data without consent and for its improper use, rejecting the allegations of extortion.

The technical secretary of the FMF appeared at the INAI offices to address the case. Among the documents submitted, two INAI officials are involved in the process. The fine imposed on the FMF amounts to 23 million 69 thousand 707 pesos and two cents since December 2022, related to the FAN ID and the collection of personal and biometric data from attendees at the stadiums.
